The Law of Inertia states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
The law of Inertia is not often thought of as a business concept. In reality it is physics, also known as Newton’s first law of motion. So, what does it have to do with you and your business/life/relationships? Well, let’s look at the definition again. The Law of Inertia states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Have you ever noticed that when things seem to be going great they keep going great and when they are going bad we can’t seem to catch a break? I equate this to The Law of Inertia. We typically talk about the way our life is going according to our present circumstances, therefore, reinforcing in our mind that is how things are. Good, bad, or indifferent we tend to go with the flow of life because we are in our comfort zone.
I was listening to a lecture by Brian Tracy about self-confidence from 20 plus years ago and what he had to say struck me. He was telling a group of people that we have the power to change the direction of our lives with how we think. I was skeptical at first, but listening to him further I bought in to what he was saying.
The gist was this: our actions are directly tied to the way we think about ourselves. When we have a high opinion of ourselves it is not only reflected in our mind and heart, but it is projected as self-confidence to the world. Self-confidence is attractive to others. Name one great business person who did not have self-confidence. I’ll wait…. There really aren’t many, if any. If we want to succeed in life we are going to have to first like ourselves before we can impact others.
Back to The Law of Inertia – How does it apply to what I am saying? Self-talk has a direct link to self-confidence, which is what either propels change in our lives or keeps us exactly where we are. Self-talk and self-confidence are the outside force that will either change the direction of the object in motion or propel the object at rest.
What is your self-talk like? What are you saying to yourself every day that is either propelling you or bringing you to a halt. I challenge you to control your tongue. To only speak life and success with your mouth and remove the negative speech. I would also encourage you to read Brian Tracy’s book Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life it will help you!
