What's So Great About Failure?

Posted by Adam Ward on

It is common to hear especially in the entrepreneur world that you are going to fail, and this its ok. There are even quotes and motivational sayings encouraging you to “Fail Forward,” but not everyone understands why. Sure on a basic level in hindsight, we can understand that failure shows we tried, we missed the mark, and then we get back on the horse, but there is more to it than that.

If you are never supposed to give up than how can you never fail? Thomas Edison didn't forever fail, he just needed that 10,000th light bulb before he succeeded. Ok, but what if he had stopped at 9000, what if he stopped at 9999 and decided that he did not want to actually go for that 10,000th? Our world would probably look a little different.

To negatively fail at something, a person must give up. If you set a goal to increase profitability by a certain degree by a specific time, (which you should do) and you don’t reach that metric, then by all account of the word you have failed to hit your goal.

Sometimes we set goals that we don't achieve. Even though we might miss them, we still grow in the process.  It's important to acknowledge the wins and grow from the losses - and never deem yourself a failure just because you may have failed.

Failure is going to happen, there are going to be bad days, weeks, months, even years, in your business and personal life. There are going to be times when you tell yourself you don’t know if you can continue doing this, you don’t think it's going to work, and quite honestly might get tired of trying.  Learn to rest, and then get up and keep working towards your goals.  If this life was easy, if your dream life was easy, well then, everyone would be doing it.

The worst thing you can do is give up. Fail, fall off that horse, enjoy the roller coaster of your journey. You are going to have ups and downs. You are going to spend months working at something, and see other people become successful.  Stay focused on what you're working towards, drawing inspiration from other's successes and one day you'll look back and be shocked by how far you've come.

So, why should we embrace failure?  So that we can succeed. So we know how great if feels to get back up, dust ourselves off, and keep pressing forward.

When you allow yourself the room to fail, and choose to learn from it, even if it might hurt, but it's part of the process.  It allows you to learn what not to do, so that you can discover what TO do. Failure isn't something that should be avoided, its something to be minimized and accepted as part of the process to having that amazing great and goal in your life.

So, get up dream chaser… stop being so afraid of failure... you’ve got work to do.
